Shop With A Cop

The Event

"Shop with a Cop" is a charity event that is hosted by hundreds of police departments throughout the county. The event will be 100% funded by donations from local businesses and private citizens. Shop with a cop is designed to aid underprivileged, school-aged children and their families in purchasing items they could otherwise not afford. many other police departments usually center their event around Christmas. the Sandy Police Department has decided to host the event before the start of the 2008/2009 school year. If funding allows, the Sandy Police Department would also like to host another shop with a Cop before next Christmas. Selected students, escorted with a police officer, will be given the opportunity to purchase school supplies and perhaps parental-approved clothing. The goal is to raise $5000 which would provide $100 for 50 students or $200 for 25 students, depending on their need.

When:

The event is scheduled for August 16, 2008 at 8:00 am

Where:

The Sandy Fred Meyer store has already generously donated some resources in aiding the event. They plan to donate funds as well.

Implementation:

Many sandy officers have already volunteered to assist in gathering funds. The process is simple in theory. Officers volunteering their time will "walk" around the City of Sandy and physically meet with store managers and owners asking for donations. Each donator will be given a receipt and tax benefit form. Nobody will be pressured to donate that day, requiring follow up for many of the local businesses.

Students to receive aid will be chosen from the following sources: The Oregon Trail School District students enrolled in the School Lunch Program, local churches, the Sandy Community Center, etc...

The Sandy Post has already graciously volunteered to write a couple editorials about the event. The first will show up in the paper a few months before the event asking citizens to donate funds. The second story will be after the event. The plan is to list all businesses and citizens who have donated funds in a sort of ranking system unless they prefer to remain anonymous. For instance, bronze, silver, gold, platinum.
